A careers hub is a dedicated area in which a candidate (you) can visit and find everything that they need to find a job in their particular field of interest. Career hubs range variably by sector, skills or simply company.

Below we have listed many websites for you to consider when looking for a career hub. But first lets assess why career hubs are such useful tools when looking for work.

  1. They are niche for a particular industry
  2. Learn about the key employers and influencers in that niche
  3. Become known within that career hub niche

Let’s face it, no matter what we are looking to do in this day and age we are faced with information overload. This is no different — and even more so — when looking for a new job. At this point a Career Hub can be invaluable.

Due to the fact that your career hub will be niche by a skill, experience, qualification or organisation pertinent to your chosen field it makes life much more easier for you to wrap your head around the the industry, the skills needed, the employers and how you go about putting yourself out there and in the mix for one of the roles — a tip it is never best to just blindly through your CV at the wall hoping it will stick.

We see and hear many people on social media or who chose to interact with getintonuclear.com directly who quote that they “have sent out 100’s of CV’s and completed 100’s of applications and haven’t heard anything back” or are told “your CV is great, your experience is great, someone would be lucky to have you as an employee” but they are still not finding themselves a new role any time soon.

Although this post is not specifically for the nuclear industry our jobs.getintonuclear.com is a niche hub for all things nuclear. What we are able to help people with by being a career hub is by providing them with a six-step process to getting into the nuclear industry. A generic job search engine could not do this.

It is often underestimated how important that it is now when applying for work to be fully conversant with the industry and its comings and goings. You will often find that the hiring staff undertaking the industry are both very passionate about their particular industry and have often been embedded in the industry for a long time. Therefore, it is important for you to be able to speak the language of the industry, have information of recent contract awards, completed work, news article and more importantly have an opinion on them.

Being part of a hub you should be able to get some insights about the specific industry that you are interested in which would be very difficult to get if you was part of a more generic application only job site. This will allow you to better tailor your CV or covering letter that will support your ultimate job application.

It will also be much easier to identify live roles or at least the key employers in your field.

The above first 2 reasons for being part of a Career Hub above are the prerequisites to #3 which are all about using what you have learning and becoming known in you particular niche.

The biggest successes we have seen at getintonuclear.com are with the people who have fully embraced this step in the six-steps to get into nuclear. One thing we must stress here that you need to be you. If you are comfortable writing an article on LinkedIn and mentioned a CEO of a key employer — do that. If you are happy to comment on Twitter updates and Instragram videos — do that. If you are not comfortable starting a podcast — don’t do that. It is important that you stick to who you are at let that come through in your interactions.

Here we are looking to give you the opportunity to interact with the key employers and influencers you identified above using the information that you have learned about you particular niche. You can learn more about companies by attending events or webinars and interacting positively with the company and key stakeholder on social media. This will allow you to establish yourself as an expert in you field.

As discussed earlier the world really is your oyster and you can do as much or as little of the above as you would like — however, don’t let fear stop you in your tracks you need to be doing at least some of the below;

  • start a website/blog or post regular articles on LinkedIn or Medium
  • follow key companies and influencers in your niche on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc.) and engage with them. Don’t blindly like everything that they post; comment and give opinions where necessary to strike up a conversation.
  • listen to podcasts on your niche (write, post, comment on them using the mediums above)
  • offer to be interviewed for a podcast in your niche
  • create your own podcast in your niche
  • post videos on YouTube on your niche and share on social media
  • post live videos on social media
  • create unique content for TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat etc.

This is very much dependant on what you are interested in being for field of work in the future. There are many available and we have tried to list some below. If the below don’t quite fit and you decide to go it alone on google just remember that just googling “[niche] career hub” will not always work as they come under a number of guises.

  1. - Institution of Occupational Safety and Health Career Hub
  2. myjobscotland.gov.uk — National jobs-portal for all Scotland’s 32 councils
  3. careerhubuk.com — Help students and young professionals build great
  4. cilip.org.uk — Support and guidance to help you whatever stage of your career
