City Break Checklist

Plan to avoid derailing your trip

I’ve recently returned from a weekend away with my wife in Oslo, Norway. We had a great time, really enjoyed the city and had a much-needed break away from reality.

However, I made a schoolboy error in that I didn’t check how far the airport was from the city, assuming that when Ryanair advertise flights to Oslo, they are to Oslo Airport, not Oslo Torp, which is 90 mins away and £323 in a taxi EACH WAY.

To be clear, I am not complaining about Ryanair (for once) as I should know better and check the distance to the city from the airport before booking. This got me to create my checklist for the next of our city breaks (we are thinking Prague) that I thought may be helpful for others here.

City Break Checklist

Transport

  • Getting to the Airport (Taxi, Car Park, willing Friend)
  • Visas (do you need them? — from personal experience, do not assume anything)
  • Flights (remember to consider baggage and seat allocation when selecting the flight — the cheapest advertised flight is not always the most affordable when you factor these in!)
  • Transfer to/from accommodation (Train, Taxi, Shuttle Bus). Try to pre-book ahead of travelling. The train is…
